A compact chemical family tree

Cannabigerolic acid, abbreviated CBGA, acts as a central branch point in cannabinoid biosynthesis. Plant enzymes can convert it into other acidic cannabinoids, including THCa and CBDA. Research that rebuilt the pathway in yeast demonstrated production of CBGA, THCa, and CBDA using the relevant biosynthetic machinery, helping establish the precursor relationships without relying on product folklore.

Those acidic molecules can lose carbon dioxide through decarboxylation. THCa becomes THC, CBDA becomes CBD, and CBGA becomes CBG. The resulting names are not interchangeable with their precursors. A laboratory that measures both forms reports them separately because their molecular masses and chemical identities differ.

THC and THCa

THCa is the acidic precursor present in the living plant. Heat converts it to THC by removing a carboxyl group as carbon dioxide. The mass change is the reason Total THC cannot be calculated by simply adding the two percentages: THCa has a molecular weight of 358.47 grams per mole, compared with 314.46 for THC.

On a report, look for separate THCa, THC, and Total THC entries. The calculated relationship is Total THC = (THCa × 0.877) + THC. A sample with 50% THCa and 2% THC therefore has a theoretical Total THC of 45.85%, subject to the report’s rounding. The calculation standardizes the panel; it does not merge the underlying molecules into one laboratory result.

CBD and CBG

CBD is the neutral form associated with the acidic precursor CBDA. CBG is the neutral form associated with CBGA, the central precursor that can also feed other branches of the plant’s cannabinoid pathway. Describing those origins is more precise than calling either compound a different “type of THC.” They have their own structures and their own report lines.

Some panels show both the acidic and neutral form for a cannabinoid, while others emphasize only compounds included in the laboratory’s method or detected above its reporting threshold. Read the exact analyte name and unit. A CBD value does not stand in for CBDA, and a CBG value does not reveal how much CBGA was present unless the corresponding acid row is also reported.

CBN and a profile that changes over time

CBN is cannabinol, another distinct cannabinoid that can appear on a panel. Primary analytical research describes CBN formation through oxidation of THC during storage and exposure to environmental factors. That makes CBN different from the simple acid-to-neutral pairs above: it is often discussed as part of a changing or aged chemical profile rather than as a direct synonym for THC.

A CBN percentage still means only what the named row says. It should not be added into Total THC, and its presence does not authorize a medical or effects conclusion. The defensible statement is compositional: the laboratory measured a separate molecule in the submitted sample, under the method and reporting limits identified by the COA.

How to read the group on a label

Begin with the batch number so the report and package match. Then note every cannabinoid’s full name, whether it is acidic or neutral, its unit, and whether the value is a direct measurement or a calculated total. Percentages and milligrams per gram describe concentration on different scales and should be converted before comparison.

Next, keep totals narrow. Total THC combines THCa after the 0.877 mass adjustment with measured THC; it does not mean “all cannabinoids.” CBD, CBG, and CBN remain separate unless the report provides a separately defined total for them. Finally, respect the panel’s scope: it describes analytes the laboratory tested and reported for that sample. It is a chemistry record, not a complete prediction about the product or the person encountering it.

The suffix is part of the analyte name, not optional punctuation. THCa and THC occupy separate rows for the same reason CBDA and CBD can occupy separate rows: one is an acidic precursor and one is its decarboxylated counterpart. If a panel lists only one member of a pair, do not invent the missing value. Report what was measured, use a defined formula only where one is supplied, and leave unrelated cannabinoids out of that calculation.
