Why the three layer percentages do not add

A moon rock contains flower, concentrate, and kief. If those percentages were simply added, the calculation would ignore the mass of each layer and could produce a result that has no physical meaning. A small amount of a high-percentage concentrate cannot make the entire object equal to the concentrate's percentage.

The correct idea is a weighted blend. For each layer, multiply its potency by its share of the finished weight. Add those contributions, then divide by the total weight. In compact form: finished potency equals the sum of each layer's potency times its mass, divided by the total mass.

This is why a finished moon rock can reach as high as 70% while its concentrate coating alone can reach as high as 90%. The lower-potency flower and the kief remain part of the denominator. The coating raises the blend, but it does not erase the mass of the other layers.

Flower sets the base

Flower in the 15–25% THC range supplies the structure of a moon rock and much of its total mass. Potency is only one of the jobs the base performs.

Starting flower still matters after infusion. If two constructions use the same amount and type of concentrate but begin with flower at different measured percentages, their finished weighted results will differ. The label for the final batch accounts for that difference; a generic format range cannot.

The flower figure should also be read as a range rather than a fixed definition. “Flower” identifies plant material, not one universal potency. Batch testing is what turns that broad category into a number for a specific product.

Concentrate raises the blend

A concentrate coating can run as high as 90%, which is much higher than the supplied flower range. Adding it increases the amount of measured cannabinoid material relative to the finished mass. It also acts as the adhesive for a kief coat in a classic three-layer construction.

The coating's share of total weight determines how strongly its number pulls the blend upward. A thin, even application and a heavy application cannot be assumed to produce the same final percentage, even when the concentrate comes from the same source batch.

Distribution changes construction and burn behavior, but it does not change the arithmetic rule. Concentrate in one thick pocket and the same mass spread evenly would contribute the same theoretical weight to the whole. The second construction may behave more consistently, while the finished potency still requires testing rather than visual estimation.

Why diamonds need a conversion note

THCa diamonds can reach 99% and above because crystallization excludes solvents, lipids, and other cannabinoids from the THCa crystal lattice into the surrounding liquid. That purity figure refers to THCa, the acidic precursor, not an equal mass of THC after heating.

Decarboxylation removes carbon dioxide and changes molecular mass. The standard conversion factor is 0.877, calculated from the molecular weights of THC and THCa. Total THC is calculated as THCa multiplied by 0.877, plus any THC already present.

A 99% THCa material therefore has a theoretical maximum of about 87% THC after full conversion, before accounting for any conversion loss. Saying “99% THCa” and saying “99% THC” are not two ways to report the same result.

How to compare format labels

First identify whether the number refers to THC, THCa, Total THC, total cannabinoids, or one ingredient. Then check whether it describes raw material or the finished format. A concentrate input percentage belongs to the input; a moon rock batch result belongs to the complete three-layer blend.

Next look for the batch-specific measurement rather than relying on the category ceiling. A statement that moon rocks can reach as high as 70% does not establish the result for every moon rock. The same caution applies to flower, coatings, and diamonds.

Finally, keep potency separate from construction quality. A percentage describes measured composition. Even distribution, layer adhesion, airflow, and burn behavior describe how the format was built. A careful comparison uses both kinds of information without asking either one to prove the other.
